What you’ll find here

Education that makes things make sense

Understanding what substance use disorder actually is — and is not — changes how families respond to it. The group is built on education first.

Practical strategies, not platitudes

Concrete approaches concerned others can use to reclaim their lives, regain happiness, and encourage their loved one toward treatment and recovery.

An end to carrying it alone

Secrecy and isolation make everything heavier. Sitting with people who genuinely understand — without having to explain or justify anything — is its own kind of relief.

Support without losing yourself

You can love someone fiercely and still step out of the patterns that exhaust you. The group offers support and guidance for families working through exactly that.

Where this approach comes from

The group is based on the work of Dr. Ed Hughes, MPS, LICDC, built from more than 26 years of experience in the addiction field. Its core insight: families play an important role in their loved one’s recovery — and well-intended rescuing can delay the moment a person finds their own motivation to seek help.

Learning to step out of that cycle is confusing and heart-wrenching. Nobody is asked to stop loving, stop caring, or give up. The group exists to walk families through it, together.

Who this group is for

Adult family members, partners, friends, and caregivers of someone struggling with alcohol or other substance use. Whether your loved one is in active use, in treatment, in recovery, or refusing help entirely — you belong here. You do not need your loved one’s permission, participation, or even awareness to attend.

What to expect your first time

Just show up

No registration, no intake, no preparation. Come on a Thursday at 5:30.

Listen as long as you want

There is no requirement to share. Plenty of people just listen for the first while — that counts as participating.

What’s said here stays here

The group is confidential. People speak honestly because everyone in the room is protecting the same thing.

Common Questions

Does it really cost nothing?2026-07-08T18:15:52-05:00

Really. No cost, no registration, every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at 6103 39th Ave.

My loved one refuses help. Is this still for me?2026-07-08T18:16:17-05:00

Especially then. The group is for you — your understanding, your boundaries, your life. People do not have to be ready for treatment for their families to deserve support.

Do I have to talk?2026-07-08T18:16:38-05:00

No. Listen for as long as you need. Share when and if you are ready.

Is this the same as Al-Anon?2026-07-08T18:16:55-05:00

It is a different program — an education-and-strategies support group based on the work of Dr. Ed Hughes — but it serves a similar need. Many families attend both. Find Al-Anon and other community meetings on the Recovery Meeting Calendar.
